My nutrition coaching clients often tell me that they have been avoiding certain foods or food groups. It seems like there is so much noise out there about what we “shouldn’t” be eating and all the foods that are “bad” for us. And every week it seems like a new food is added to that list! However, what we forget is that in order for our bodies to thrive we need to nourish and fuel them. We need to add nutritious foods into our diets to provide our bodies with the nutrients they need. So let’s talk about how we can shift our mindset and start focusing on nourishing rather than restricting!
We need to nourish and fuel our bodies
First of all, I want to make it clear that there is room in our diets for all food groups! I have heard so many people say that they avoid carbohydrates. However, there is nothing bad about carbohydrates. In fact, they provide our bodies and brains with their main source of energy. While we can make smart choices when it comes to choosing carbohydrates (for example by choosing whole grains instead of refined grains) we do not need to avoid them.

Include more diversity in your diet
Our bodies need a wide range of nutrients in order to thrive. We need to be getting different vitamins and minerals, fibre and the phytochemicals found in plants from our diets. The best way to do this is by eating a diverse range of foods!
Try to eat fruits and vegetables that are each colour of the rainbow every day. Add nuts and seeds to your salads, snacks or yogurt bowls. Try different types of whole grains such as brown rice or quinoa. Add beans and lentils to your diet. Choose different types of fruits and vegetables rather than always opting for the same ones. Not only will this help you to obtain nutrients and fibre, but it will also support your gut health.
Recognize that food serves other purposes too
Yes, it is important to nourish and fuel ourselves with food, however we need to recognize that food serves other purposes too. Sometimes we eat food simply for enjoyment, sometimes we eat food when socializing with others, and sometimes certain foods or meals can be part of our cultural or religious practices. And that is ok! Give yourself the freedom and permission to enjoy food in these settings!
