I just got back from a couple of amazing weeks visiting family in England and Austria. It was lovely to spend some quality time with my family and go on a few adventures too!
One thing that I was pleasantly surprised by was the vegetarian meal that I was served on my Air Canada flight from Vancouver to London. So here is a summary of everything I ate on my flight to London: vegetarian edition!
I would like to apologize in advance for the quality of these photos… it turns out that the lighting and movement of the plane wasn’t very conducive to taking good pictures!
Ordering a vegetarian meal ahead of time
We flew from Vancouver, Canada to London, England in premium economy with Air Canada. I ordered my vegetarian meal ahead of time. I was glad that I did, as the meal options if you chose during the flight were beef stew or chicken.

The food
Once we were in the air, we were given Twigz butter and garlic pretzel twists and offered a glass of wine or soft drink.

I am not usually a fan of the pretzels served on planes but I actually really enjoyed these! They were buttery, salty and crunchy.
About 45 minutes later we were served our main meal. Mine consisted of a vegetable stew served with rice and broccoli, a salad, a bread roll, and fresh fruit for dessert. I was also given salad dressing, margarine for my roll, and coffee creamer (even though I wasn’t drinking coffee).

I was really impressed by how fresh the salad and the fruit were. In the past, I have always found that the food served on planes lacks freshness, so this was a nice change!
The dressing was olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which paired really well with the greens and tomatoes in the salad.
The fruit plate consisted of grapes, strawberries and slices of melon.

The stew was also surprisingly tasty! It was well seasoned and contained lots of vegetables such as peas, carrots and onions.
The bread roll was a bit disappointing. It came packaged in plastic and was quite dry. I didn’t end up eating it. The non-vegetarians on the flight were served fresh bread. It appeared to be vegetarian so it was a shame that I wasn’t served the same.
Shortly before we landed I was served a vanilla yogurt and lemon and cranberry loaf (I forgot to get a picture). The yogurt was delicious but I gave the loaf to my husband, as I didn’t really fancy it at the time.
Overall thoughts
Overall, I was quite impressed by the food I was served. In particular, I was surprised at how fresh the fruit and salad were.
However, one thing I did note was that the vegetarian meal lacked protein. It would have been nice if they had added some beans or chickpeas to the stew.
I would love to hear what your experience of vegetarian meals on planes has been like!
