Tempeh is an excellent source of plant-based protein. It has a unique nutty flavour and can be used in so many different ways. However, it doesn’t seem to get nearly as much attention as tofu! So let’s take a closer look at what it is and how to use it.
What is tempeh?
Tempeh is traditionally made from fermented soybeans. You can find it in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, usually near the tofu.
Sometimes you can find tempeh made from other fermented beans which can be a great option if you fancy something a little different.
Tempeh is a source of plant-based protein. You can use it as a meat replacement in so many different ways (I will give you some suggestions later on).
It tends to take on the flavour of whatever marinade or sauce that you use. You can also buy pre-marinated tempeh. One option is a smoky variety that is sometimes marketed as a plant-based alternative to bacon. This can be a great place to start if you are trying it for the first time!

How to use tempeh
Tempeh crisps up nicely when sliced and pan fried. This makes it a great addition to sandwiches. If you are using the smoky marinated variety, it can be a great bacon substitute in a plant-based version of a BLT.
It also crumbles well. Try using crumbled tempeh in tacos or salads. Because it is a source of protein, it will help to make you meal more filling and satiating.
One of my favourite recipes is this Red Pepper and Tempeh Pasta. The texture of the crumbled tempeh in the sauce reminds me of a Bolognese. Plus, the recipe includes some hidden veggies which will help you to get some extra nutrients in!
